Kaffrine Scholarship Program (95300)

Vision

This project is enabling children and youth from the small Christian community of the Kaffrine area who are otherwise at risk of not getting a good education to go to school by paying their tuition and associated school fees and costs. In addition to the obvious benefits to the students themselves (literacy, math skills, French, earning diplomas that lead to better job opportunities, etc.), there will be long-term benefits to their families and communities and to the Church of Senegal as they gain knowledge and training that enables them to do more skilled work, to support themselves and their families with increased income, and to be community and church leaders in the future.

Project Background

In 2007 the Kaffrine team realized that we were seeing the fruit of several years' labor in evangelism and discipleship with local families and that there was a group of children and youth who were being brought up with knowledge of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. At the same time, many of these children were at risk of not being able to pursue an education for a variety of reasons, primarily financial. Our team was encouraged by Senegalese church leaders from other parts of Senegal to invest in the education of these youth.

The Scholarship Project includes the children of the few believers in the Kaffrine area, as well as several youth who have, on their own but with their parents' blessing, been drawn to study God's Word and participate in the Christian community here in Kaffrine. In addition to the financial support, the students are also being discipled and taught the Word of God. After nine years of managing this endeavor, we have seen the trajectory of young people's lives changed dramatically through this Scholarship.

As a team we believe that this is an important and high-impact ministry for the long-term good of these young people, their families, and the church of Senegal.

Progress

Kaffrine is the region of Senegal with the lowest rate of secondary school attendance - 6 percent. This project is helping students overcome this trend and the obstacles that would prevent them from getting a solid education by providing both financial support and encouragement and mentoring that helps them to stay in school.

There are 15 students on scholarship for this 2015-2016 academic year. This includes seven children who attend the Catholic elementary school in Kaffrine. The Scholarship is also enabling three middle-school students and three high-school students to attend the local public schools. In addition, there is one student from Kaffrine who earned a place at the University of St. Louis and who is entering his third year as an English major with a partial Scholarship. The remaining Scholarship student received her bac (end of high-school diploma) and is still awaiting admission at university or in another training program.

All of the young people in the Scholarship Project are part of a weekly Bible study group. For some, this means coming to church or Sunday School, for others this means being part of an evening youth group meeting. In this way, the students on scholarship are getting a full education, studying God's Word as well as subjects like math and French.
