Ophthalmology Program (93911)
Villagers who reside in rural areas of developing countries are very susceptible to ocular problems. In Burkina Faso, there are more than 150,000, or 1.5% of the population, that are blind, and 38,000 that suffer from trachoma. Despite the urgent need, there are not enough ophthalmology centers, nor ophthalmology specialists in Burkina Faso. In the eastern part of the country, there is only one ophthalmology center located in Fada N'Gourma, which is still very far from most villages.
Donations to this project will be used for the construction of two ophthalmology centers—within the medical centers that SIM operates in Mahadaga and Piela. These centers will be equipped to treat patients with a variety of ocular problems, and to perform surgery for cataracts and trachoma. They will also provide information, education, and regular screenings to the surrounding community and villages to aid in the prevention of or recovery from ocular-related problems. Construction is expected to be completed as early as December 2010.
