Fulani Bible Translation (93415)
Recently, Fulani Bible translator Pastor Isaac saw first hand the value of his hard work. During the morning devotions at a training seminar for Beninese Fulani pastors, one of the pastors rose to read Luke 18:1-8 from his Cameroon Fulani Bible. Pastor Isaac stood and asked if he could read the text from the Benin Fulani translation that he is presently working on.
When Isaac finished reading, the other pastor remarked that he would no longer need a commentary when preparing messages! He said that everything that was hidden in the Cameroon Fulani Bible translation that they had been using was now clear in this portion of the new translation that Pastor Isaac had read.
Doesn't this remind you of the disciples on the road to Emmaus? Speaking later of their encounter with the risen Jesus, they said: "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" (Luke 24:32, NIV)
The Fulani people, almost totally Muslim, are found from Senegal to Cameroon in Sub-Saharan West Africa. Across West Africa, many Fulani dialects are spoken, requiring distinct translations. The Fulani are heavily concentrated in northern Benin, where an active church and the only fulltime Fulani Bible School has been established through SIM's ministry. Without a Bible translation in their Fulfulde dialect, the meaning of the Scriptures is hidden in words unfamiliar to many faithful believers.
The work in Benin is similar to other translation projects in Niger and Burkina Faso. Besides the day to day work, the different teams meet together to compare their work, and to help each other overcome obstacles. Just as Pastor Isaac discovered at the conference, the translations will allow the Scriptures to come alive for these hardy, nomadic people.
You, too, can be a part of this project. Would you invest financially in the Fulani people? Funds go towards the costs of travel, consultants, computer equipment and salaries. These are the practical expenses that will result in a Bible written in the heart language of the Beninese Fulani. Presently the project is running short on funding.
PrayPlease pray that God will provide supporters to enable this vital work to continue.Thank you for your vital partnership in this effort!
