Medical Aid for Spiritual Impact in Gonzanamá (91891)

Showing the love of Christ in practical ways is opening the door for God to work in rural southern Ecuador. The Medical Aid for Spiritual Impact project was established by SIM missionaries Amanda King and Chandra Smith to respond to the pressing medical needs in Gonzanamá, a poor community in the Loja province.

Zarley's Story

Karla and Zarley
This project has shown Christ's
compassion to Karla and her
daughter Zarley and has
opened the door for the Gospel
in their family.

Already, they have seen how meeting physical needs has helped break down barriers to the Gospel message. Zarley is her family's miracle. Born four months prematurely, she was a vibrant, confident, and fun-loving child. But as she grew, her eyes began to become crossed.

Her personality changed, and she became withdrawn and scared. Running into things and falling down stairs, Zarley couldn't focus her eyes clearly on anything. The community blamed her mother Karla and ostracized her for not caring properly for her daughter. Karla withdrew and no longer attended the Bible study where Amanda and Chandra had gotten to know her.

Thanks to the generosity of concerned Christians, Chandra was able to help the family take Zarley to an ophthalmologist in Loja city. He said that her vision could be corrected. The family worked hard to raise USD $100 for the surgery, and the Medical Aid project funded the rest.

Now Zarley can see well and has returned to her confident, fun-loving self. Karla has come back to the Bible study and is growing in her faith. Amazingly, her father, who had previously ridiculed Karla for studying the Bible, has begun defending evangelicals when other members of the community speak out against them.

More Opportunities to Help

Amanda and Chandra have identified other candidates for assistance from the project. Most of them are children, and in each case, the medical need addressed will be something that can be treated with a one time procedure. Each family assisted by the project will contribute 25% towards their treatment.

  • That this project will make a spiritual impact in the lives of the communities that it touches.
  • For wisdom for the committee who will determine who can receive assistance.

Showing love like Jesus did by taking care of the poor and healing the sick has made way for the Gospel message in Gonzanamá. Through your partnership, this project can continue to help meet urgent medical needs like Zarley's.
