Gideon Theological College Facilities Development (84800)
Gideon Theological College is the only higher level theological school of the Sudan Interior Church (SIC), SIM’s church partner in South Sudan. It provides training for all SIC pastors and evangelists through Arabic and English diploma programmes and an English Bachelor of Theology program. It also provides a two-year Certificate in Christian Service for student spouses. Deliberately diverse, the present student body represents six denominations and seven ethnic groups within South Sudan.
SIM desires to see all the churches that we have helped to plant engage in Christian scholarship. We promote theological education worldwide through founding and helping to run training local institutions, offering scholarships, funding the development of indigenous curricula and much more. Today, schools that serve partner churches of SIM number in the hundreds—communities where men and women reflect on God’s revelation in Scripture in order to learn how to bring transformation to their cultures.
SIM supports Gideon Theological College in three specific ways: Firstly, to provide housing for two missionary families who participate in college life and contribute by teaching; secondly, to provide housing for college students; and thirdly, to create a vegetable garden for the college.
As part of a separate Partner Project, SIM South Sudan also intends to assist with the basic annual operating costs of Gideon Theological College and provide scholarships for SIC students. Sudanese churches make staff available for the college but do not have funds to cover their salaries or to provide for students' living expenses while attending school.
History: In November 1975 the first students began classes in a new Bible school in Omdurman, Sudan. The school was named Gideon Theological College to commemorate Pastor Gideon Adwok who died as a martyr of the Lord Jesus Christ, together with his two elders, in the turmoil of the civil war in 1964. Today the school is relocated to Melut, South Sudan, and is a joint ministry of the Sudan United Mission, now called Action Partners, the SUM-related Sudan Church of Christ (SCOC), SIM and SIC.
