What Kind of People Does SIM Need?

Many people ask me, “What kind of person is SIM looking for?” Often they are already thinking of one ministry—church planting—and often I will simply respond by listing off some of the needs we have just now around the world. But when I stop to think about this question further, a few other qualities come to my mind.

I believe we need people in SIM who are:

  1. Dependent on God
  2. Sensitive to what God is saying in the context where they are serving
  3. Flexible and harmonious
  4. Filled with courage and perseverance
  5. Loving and compassionate
  6. Faithfully witnessing in word and action
  7. Humble, gentle, and full of respect for others
  8. Committed to discipling through thick and thin
  9. Living up to the truth
  10. Able to leave judgment in the hands of God

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I think it illustrates a point: Serving God is about character. Bishop David Zac Niringye of Uganda painted a powerful vision for mission work at the recent Global Issues Summit in Goudini, South Africa (sponsored by the World Evangelical Alliance). Dr. Howard Brant, who champions emerging missions for SIM, summarized the bishop’s message.

When we see missions from a Kingdom perspective, we find God is already at work among the nations. He invites us to come and join with Him in His work. Instead of a “Go” metaphor, this is a “Welcome” metaphor, where Jesus is asking us to follow Him into the nations. The Bishop pictures Jesus already at work in the mosque, inviting us to the mosque to make disciples there. . . . We are invited to participate with Him—but we are called without regard to our individual backgrounds. We are invited as servants of the King.

SIM needs servants of the King—people who will work together in community, as part of God’s family, to accomplish His purposes among the nations. When I visit SIM ministries around the globe, I am always amazed by the remarkable things God is doing through this organization in these days. Still I am most impressed by the calibre of the SIM workers I meet along the way. It’s truly an honour to serve in God’s mission together.

Is God calling you to serve His mission around the world? SIM is a global community of God’s people waiting to embrace you, encourage and equip you, and send you on your way.
