Taking the Lead for World AIDS Day
December 1, 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. The theme for this year is "Lead Empower Deliver," calling on both governments and individuals to work to bring an end to the disease that still affects 33 million people worldwide. As Christians, we hear the call from the pages of Scripture to care for the sick, work for prevention, and strive to end the disease. But ending AIDS and showing Christ's compassion to the millions who are suffering won't happen unless many people take the lead in their spheres of influence. SIM's ResponseHIV and AIDS is one of SIM's top ministry priorities, and through HOPE for AIDS, we are working at a grass-roots level with local churches to help them lead in:
SHALOM Dehli is a HOPE for AIDS project in India. SIM works in partnership with the Emmanuel Hospital Association to carry out home-based care, pastor education, mobilization of church volunteers, and building community awareness. "Priyah" and her daughters have received compassionate care from SHALOM. After her husband died of an AIDS-related illness, Priyah began to receive free anti-retroviral treatment through the clinic, and her health improved greatly. The adolescent program teaches her girls how to care for their health in a supportive environment. Priyah is grateful that SHALOM looks after the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of her entire family. Get InvolvedThere are many people like Priyah who need to know that God cares for them.
