Seven Essentials of New Initiatives in Mission
by Dr. Howard Brant, Champion for New Initiatives in Mission
16 June 2008

After pondering this issue now for a number of years, I suggest seven essentials that must coalesce for a country to change from a harvest field to a harvest force. These would include:

  1. Called Individuals: People who are specifically called by God and set apart for the Gospel.
  2. Visionary Leaders: Leaders who see what God is doing in the world and in their nation -- and have a vision of how God could use their country to bless the nations of the world.
  3. Missional Churches: Churches that have a missionary vision and are willing to commission their members to take the Gospel. “How can they go unless they are sent.”
  4. Appropriate Training: Not just academic training but practical mission training.
  5. Flexible Structures: The kinds of structures that can change and adapt according to the needs of the missionary involved—often working out partnership agreements that may look different for each one.
  6. Sustainable Finance: Where the responsibility for raising finance is on the sending country. That does NOT mean that all finance must come from that country, but that the sending body is the responsible body in regard to finance.
  7. Powerful Prayer Movements: Where the whole movement is backed with powerful prayer.
