Teachers are Needed at Sahel Academy
11 May 2009
Sahel Academy is an international Christian school located in Niamey, Niger. The school was opened initially to meet the educational needs of SIM missionary families, but its scope has broadened to include representation from other missions and organizations in the English-speaking community. Sahel Academy is also committed to meeting the needs of the English-speaking African community. Sahel Academy follows an international curriculum which includes IGCSE courses (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) from Cambridge University for Grades 9 and 10. The school has recently begun the process of accreditation with ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) and MSA (Middle States of America). Currently, Sahel Academy has 80 students in grades K-12 representing 14 countries and a staff of 22 from 4 different nations. This year, 18 of the students are boarders at the Eagle’s Nest dorm on campus while the rest live with their families in Niamey. Why teach at Sahel Academy?Mikki Schmidt, a teacher at Sahel Academy, shares "Sahel Academy is more than a school; it is a community. The teachers at Sahel pray for one another and for their students.""In the classroom I have the opportunity to challenge students to think about how their studies can be applied to their lives as they seek to be all God created them to be," she says. "The students at Sahel Academy come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and many have experienced living in several cultures in a short time span. They have incredible experiences and insights to share which make the learning environment all the richer. They, like all of us, are on their own spiritual journeys and are seeking to better understand themselves, the world, and how they fit into it. What a privilege to be a part of their discovery process, to learn and grow and serve with them!" Teachers at Sahel Academy are a vital part of the mission team, supporting the education needs of children whose parents are serving in remote locations, away from suitable educational options.
