Rebuilding South Sudan: Better Together
1 March 2007

Impassable roads. Bombed-out clinics. An unschooled generation. Scattered families. Increasing HIV infections. Traumatized communities.

Decades of war left South Sudan with unimaginable needs that threaten to defeat all attempts at solutions. Nevertheless, a coalition of partners has boldly begun the process of rebuilding the church and nation.

Laiu Fachhai, Director of SIM Sudan, wrote to his team: “Good and active partnership between Christian missions, churches, and organizations will be a strong testimony of Christian unity to Sudan, a land that has seen anger and disunity. Therefore, SIM will continue to proactively promote and facilitate partnership in Sudan in the coming years. … [W]hile partnership does at times become messy, God will help us overcome. Let us concentrate on our similarities and common vision and purposes, rather than dwelling on and emphasizing a few differences.”

In 1972 SIM helped start “Across” (www.across-sudan.org), a partnership of several agencies and churches. Other partners now rebuilding South Sudan with us include:

  • The Sudan Interior Church (SIC)
  • Teachers from the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA)—Nigeria
  • Teachers from the Kale Heywet Church (EKHC)—Ethiopia
  • Samaritan’s Purse
  • Cush Partnership (research network)
  • World Relief
  • A water engineer from the Bible Church of Africa in Ghana
