Political Unrest in Kenya Follows Elections
by Dwight Hazard, SIM Kenya Director

Kenyan man praying

No resolution has been reached in Kenya following the disputed elections. While the violence has quieted, thousands of Kenyans are still displaced. Opposition leaders are planning three days of demonstrations beginning Wednesday, January 16.

Please pray:

  • that opposing government leaders will come to agreement.
  • for SIM missionaries to know what to say and do to help and encourage their Kenyan brothers and sisters.
  • for Kenyans who have fled & are in hiding, still in danger of attacks by those of another tribe.
  • that Rift Valley Academy, a boarding school for missionary kids, will be able to reopen as planned on January 19. There are security concerns & supply issues to deal with in receiving back hundreds of boarding students.
  • for the SIM-Sudan team to safely arrive to the conference center near Nairobi for their Spiritual Life Conference scheduled for January 16
  • for the SIM Sudan team to be spiritually, emotionally & physically renewed during their conference.

01 January 2008

The presidential election process in Kenya has resulted in serious civil unrest in many points across the country. Today, 1 January 2008, has been quiet in Nairobi, and no reports have come in of unrest in other parts of the country.

All SIM Kenya personnel are safe and accounted for. SIMers in Nairobi, where much of the trouble has been centered, have been able to leave their compounds for food and other supplies. All compounds in Nairobi have walls and security guards as well as other measures for safety. Other SIM personnel in Kenya have reported that they are safe.

On Thursday, 3 January, a rally is being planned that may lead to further increased tensions. Please be in prayer for Kenya, the many Kenyans that have been affected by the disturbances, and for a peaceful resolution to the problems.

Please pray

  • for a peaceful end to the unrest.
  • for God to use Kenyan Christians as peace makers to help bring resolution.
  • that no more lives will be lost.
  • for protection for the SIM workers in Kenya.
