Listening Clubs
by Stuart & Sindia Foster, Mozambique
1 March 2005

Last year a team of four “motivators” set out for the furthest reaches of Mozambique’s most populous province to take the New Testament on cassette tapes to the Lomwe-speaking people. The “Faith Comes by Hearing” recordings had been funded by the Mozambique Bible Society and prepared at the Trans World Radio studios. The trekkers organized “listening clubs” wherever they could motivate a group of people to meet regularly with a leader to listen to a half-hour portion of the Lomwe New Testament and then discuss it. More than 5,000 people have heard the Word of God in their language through the ministry of this traveling team. The first group has now heard the entire New Testament. Demand is so high that it has been difficult to provide enough cassettes to go around.

Printed copies of the Lomwe New Testament are also popular. Some women who never attended school have used the combination of audio and print to learn to read! SIM and the Mozambique Bible Society are continuing to translate the Old Testament into Lomwe. For two million Lomwe speakers, the translated Bible can make an eternal difference.
