Flooding Cuts off Food Supply in South Sudan
29 October 2008

In the Mabaan area of Southern Sudan, severe flooding has damaged crops and cut off access to food supply.

SIM missionary Ray Lee reports that “This last flood has had a major impact on the community, affecting all the villages along the River Yabus and totally destroying food in the fields which is used until the millet is available in December.” In many villages, the supply of Dura, the staple grain, is nearly gone.

The SIM base at Doro, home of the Memorial Clinic, a nutrition village, and community health worker training school, has been affected. Crops have been destroyed, and the bridges between Doro and the nearest supply town have been washed out. People there are surviving on a handful of grain per day.

Chris Crowder, SIM Sudan director, reports that the international community is responding to the situation which has not yet become a large-scale crisis. The SIM Sudan team has designated October 29 as a day of prayer and fasting for the situation.

Pray
  • for the SIM team to have wisdom to respond to this crisis.
  • for an end to the flooding.
  • for God to supply food to the people who are hungry and suffering.
  • for the many refugees who have returned recently and haven’t been able to farm or settle in completely yet.
