Doors Have Opened in Zimbabwe
4 February 2009
Through concerted prayer and careful negotiation, a way has been opened up for SIM to send multiple bulk consignments of SEJO (highly nutritious sorghum-based meal porridge) to vulnerable groups throughout the eastern (Manicaland) portion of Zimbabwe. This distribution of food to the sick, young, and old will be accompanied by the giving of Shona Bibles and the prayerful message that Jesus is the true sustenance of life. The Zimbabwe HOPE for AIDS team led by Caiphas Ngarivhume (and famine relief officer Darlington Chikami) have liaised and trained volunteers in numerous UBC (United Baptist Church) churches throughout the eastern highlands. Phase one of the relief work aims to benefit 800 identified families through the volunteer infrastructure of local UBC churches. SIM also continues to participate in the food relief of thousands of dislocated Zimbabweans in the South African town of Musina (a South Africa-Zimbabwe border town), as well as the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg which provides a place of refuge for 1,500 people. More recently SIM ROSA (Region of Southern Africa) Director Tim Barrow and SIM-UK Director Keith Walker assisted with ministry and feeding to 2,000+ Zimbabwe refugees in Musina.
Without shelter and sanitation, and with only the food that is being provided, the scene is one of near humanitarian disaster, but in the hands of Jesus, can also a ripe harvest field, "When he saw the multitude he has compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, the harvest is plentiful but ..."(Matthew 9:36-37). PrayPlease pray for:
