Danger Prowls the Streets
1 June 2005

Maria (age 15) knocked at the door of the Harts’ home in Cochabamba, Bolivia, early one morning. She had spent the night on the streets because her home life was unbearable. Now she had learned that the streets are even more terrible. For a few days she stayed with the Harts while some of her wounds healed. Then they arranged with her parents for her to move to Mosoj Yan, a rehabilitation center for adolescent street girls. Mosoj Yan means “new way” in the Quechua language. Sara Hart is praying and working to bring teenagers into the new way of Christ.

Mosoj Yan is part of the “Network of Life,” an international affiliation of evangelical Christian organizations engaged with adolescents at risk. The entire Hart family has gotten involved in helping these hurting girls. Ten of them enjoyed an overnight pajama party at the Harts' home for a break during a time of unusual stress. The puppet team Sara created several years ago for evangelistic outreach is now increasingly ministering to teens at risk—cheering them and teaching them about HIV prevention, wisdom for living and redemption through Christ.

Juana (not her real name) was a frequent guest at El Alfarero Student Centre in Sucre, Bolivia. Her inner pain was driving her to destructive choices, despite loving advice from Joanne, one of the Centre's counselors. "I'm going to Santa Cruz to work as a prostitute," Juana announced. What a heartbreak! But when she attempted to board the bus for Santa Cruz, she was so drunk that the driver ejected her. What an embarrassment! Juana then returned to the Centre, where she recommitted her life to Christ and joined a discipleship group. What a wonderful answer to prayer!
