When We Loaned Out the Youth Center
by Jon Nykamp, Ethiopia
5 March 2008
Meeting

With the beginning of a new year here in Ethiopia came lots of meetings of the various departments of the government. Since Mekelle is the capital of the Region of Tigray, there were many such meetings in our town.

The Bureau of Youth and Sports asked us to loan them our youth center facility for four days of meetings, and then the head of the bureau asked me to talk to the whole group about what makes a successful recreation program. While they could easily see the practical, visible components of our project, I focused discussion on the theoretical aspects of youth work.

Specifically, I spoke of the underlying values that drive us and the importance of basing our work on integrity, honesty, and respect, thus leading by example and challenging the youth to apply these same values in their lives. I talked about servant leadership and working for the young people as if they are our customers. I challenged them to think of their work not as just a job but as a calling with a vision to see change and development. And I stressed the necessity of hard work and dedication in our daily efforts.

I was so encouraged by their responses. Immediately after my talk, the bureau head stood and asked everyone else to stand, and they all agreed to make a vow to work for the young people of Tigray. Some wrote, encouraging me to visit them to discuss ways of addressing the problems of their young people. Although the ideas I shared may not seem revolutionary to us in the West, they are totally different from the hierarchical and authoritarian worldview that is embedded in this culture.

God encouraged me recently with comments from two of my young friends whom I met through my work at the center and am currently mentoring. One told me that the Bible I gave him was the very first Bible he had ever read, even though he had grown up in the church. Reading it has completely influenced the way he thinks and how he wants to live.

The other one told me that it was our significant work with the youth that gave him the desire to get to know me better and learn from me. His heart’s desire is now to know God better.

We have seen God bless us and use us to be a blessing as we try our best to follow him and work hard for him daily (in spite of our mistakes and inadequacies). He has been teaching me that he will take care of the results and that I just need to do what I can today and follow his lead right now.
