Ethiopian Church Forms New Mission Agency
24 August 2005

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia--The Kale Heywet Church (KHC), which was begun by SIM in Ethiopia more than 75 years ago, has formed a cross-cultural mission sending agency, the Global Missions Program. Ato Kursie Shefeno, KHC Deputy General Secretary, describes the vision: "The General Assembly of the Kale Heywet Church of Ethiopia in one accord agreed that our focus for the next 25 years shall be global missions.... We shall do our best to turn our dreams into reality by God's grace and mercy." Dr. Aklilu Dalelo will serve as Chairperson of a nine-member candidate selection board made up of seven church leaders and two SIM workers.

The Kale Heywet Church sent two short-term teams to Asia, in 1998 and 2001, which served to spark greater mission interest across Ethiopia. Churches in both Pakistan and India are eager for more Ethiopians to come and serve with them. One couple has already completed their training, and their home churches are prepared to support them in their assigned ministry in South Asia. The Global Mission Program is also preparing to send ten evangelist teachers to Southern Sudan and two Bible School teachers to Rwanda. Candidates will be identified and recommended by regional church offices, and those who are selected by the agency are expected to be ready to go to any mission field and to serve at any cost.

Dr. Howard Brant, Deputy Director of SIM International, remarked, "KHC has sent out thousands of missionaries within Ethiopia, and now they are prepared to bless the nations of the world. This is a wonderful day in the history of KHC in Ethiopia."
