Breakfast Builds Churches

  Two children eating breakfast

Imagine serving breakfast to 1,700 kids! That's what happens every morning in Arequipa, Peru. Two hundred church volunteers gather to prepare porridge and bread for the children's physical well-being and a devotional for their spiritual well-being.

Fifteen years ago, Theo Göttert began to help churches reach out to the children in their church and community. The focus was reaching kids for Christ, while providing them with a nutritious and filling breakfast.

This project has grown over the years to include Sunday school teacher training, health care, and support for Christian schools.

Siegfried Reuter, project supervisor, comments, "We are encouraged to see an increasing number of "two generation" teams in the churches. The "first" generation is those who have been working in the project for 10-15 years, and the "second" generation is former participants in the breakfast program, or related Sunday schools or youth groups.

"On their own initiative, these teams are developing church-based and community outreach activities which relate to the needs of the local communities. We see young people coming from the highlands to the city to study and looking for opportunities to minister. If they go to a church which isn't involved in the Breakfast Program, they encourage them to do so because they see the benefit it has brought to themselves and their church."

Siegfried also takes every opportunity when meeting with church coordinators to encourage them, pray with them, and help them improve the way their church reaches out to children. Once a year, over 100 of the coordinators come together for a retreat time of spiritual refreshment, training, and mutual encouragement.

Pray

Please pray that these hundreds of children would grow up to know and love Jesus. Please pray also for blessing and encouragement for the volunteers and local churches.
